Ranking is no longer the whole job
For twenty years the goal was a blue link near the top of a results page. That still matters, but a growing share of questions now get answered directly, by AI answer engines and overviews that synthesise a response and cite a few sources. If you are not one of the cited sources, you are invisible in that answer even if you rank well below it.
Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the work of being one of those cited sources. It overlaps with SEO but is not the same job, and the difference is worth understanding before you spend on either.
How AI citation differs from ranking
Classic search ranks pages against a query. Answer engines pull sentences and facts from across pages to compose a response, then attribute them. That rewards content that states things clearly and quotably, that is easy for a model to parse, and that agrees with itself across your site. Contradictory facts on your own domain are poison here, because a model cannot tell which version to trust.
So GEO leans hard on clarity, structure, and consistency. A page that answers a question in one clean, quotable sentence is more citable than a page that buries the same fact in three paragraphs of throat-clearing.
What actually influences whether you get cited
Three things do most of the work. First, clean, crawlable, well-structured HTML with a clear heading hierarchy, so a model can read you without executing scripts. Second, valid structured data, which asserts your facts unambiguously to both search and generative engines. Third, answer-shaped content: direct responses to real questions, ideally with an FAQ, because that is the exact shape models extract.
Entity consistency underpins all of it. One set of facts about who you are and what you do, repeated cleanly across your site and your off-site profiles, is what lets a model corroborate and cite you with confidence.
You do not have to choose
The good news is that GEO and SEO pull in the same direction. Fast, crawlable, well-structured pages with valid schema and clear answers rank better and get cited more. The work that makes you legible to an AI engine is largely the work that makes you legible to Google.
What you should not do is chase either with tricks. Ranking claims you cannot evidence and thin content built for keywords hurt you in both channels now.
How we approach it
We fix the technical foundations, add valid structured data, and shape content so it is cited rather than skipped, then measure what search and AI referrals actually drive. No ranking promises, because no one credible makes them.
That is the core of SEO at InovativeX: earn visibility in search and in AI answers, and report on the traffic that results.
